Several templates are provided to aid in documenting license requirements. The two most important are:
- Template:License : This template takes a parameter indicating the license agreement or related provision which is being satisfied. See the template description for more information. Every page containing non-original content must include this template or its equivalent.
- Template:Source : This template can be used to indicate the original source of non-original material. Its use is optional unless required by the license agreement, but always recommended.
Missing license agreement
Many legacy pages do not include licensing information. Likewise, it is reasonable to expect that many people who upload new material, while acting in good faith, will not consider the need for licensing. In these cases, you can include the information yourself, or document the need for it using the template:

If no licensing information is found within 4-7 days, then the page is treated as a suspected violation.
Suspected violation
If you have reason to believe a page may contain a copyright violation, or if it has been marked as missing a license agreement for 4-7 days, then you should mark it as a suspected violation using the template:

If evidence of proper use of the material is not found within 4-7 days, then an administrator will review the page and take an appropriate action. This may mean deleting either the entire page or its copyrighted portion(s).
License agreements
WikiRPS is intended to encourage free collaboration and development of ideas. With this in mind, we have chosen to license all original content on this website under the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2 (GFDL). Non-original open content is released under various other agreements and provisions.

The GNU Free Documentation License (GNU FDL or simply GFDL) is a copyleft license for free documentation, designed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for the GNU project. It is the counterpart to the GNU GPL that gives readers the same rights to copy, redistribute and modify a work and requires all copies and derivatives to be available under the same license.
GFDL as source
Unless otherwise specified, all material on this website is licensed under the GFDL. You are therefore free to copy and adapt existing GFDL material into D&D Wiki Media to your heart's content. See WikiRPS's copyrights article for more information.
If you create an article which draws extensively from a GFDL source, please label the page with an appropriate template. If there is no template specific to that source, you can use:
GNU General Public License
The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or simply GPL) is a widely-used free software license, originally written by Richard Stallman for the GNU project. The GPL grants the recipients of a computer program the rights of the free software definition and uses copyleft to ensure the freedoms are preserved, even when the work is changed or added to. The GPL is also sometimes used to document materials other than computer software.

You are free to copy and adapt GPL and CeCILL material into D&D Wiki Media, provided that the derivative material:
- is also licensed under the GPL;
- includes a link to the original;
- contains a copyright notice;
- contains a disclaimer of warranty;
- displays the date modified.

CeCILL
CeCILL is a French-language free software license designed to be fully compatible with the GNU General Public License.
Open Gaming License
The Open Gaming License (also Open Game License or OGL) is a copyleft license designed for role-playing games. It was published by Wizards of the Coast in 2000 to license their Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition game as the System Reference Document, or SRD. It is commonly used with the d20 license to allow individuals, amateur and professional companies and groups to publish the SRD and derivative works under the d20 System trademark. It has also been used to license content unrelated to the d20 System and/or the SRD.

OGL as source
You are free to copy and adapt OGL material into WikiRPS, under the following provisions:
- The derived material must be licensed under the Open Gaming License and include a notice of the Open Gaming License (which this is).
- Product identity material excluded from the OGL must be clearly delineated as such. (We do not allow excluded product identity material on WikiRPS.)
If you create a page that incorporates OGL materials, please include the following template at the bottom of the page:
Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License
The Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License (cc-by-sa) is a Creative Commons license that requires others to give credit to the author of the work and its derivatives and to require an identical license to be used for any derivative works (see copyleft). Another license (cc-by-nc-sa) adds a restriction to allow only non-commercial use.

You are free to copy and adapt cc-by-sa material into WikiRPS, provided that the derivative material:
- is also licensed under the cc-by-sa;
- gives credit to the original author.
If you create a page which draws extensively on cc-by-sa material by AUTHOR, please include the following template at the bottom of the page:
Fair use
The fair use provision of American copyright law allows small portions of a published text to be quoted for purposes of scholarship or criticism. This provision explicitly forbids the use of such quotation for any purpose which may adversely affect "the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work"[1].
Fair use as source
Copyrighted materials on WikiRPS are used according to the fair use provision. This means they must be used only for the purpose of discussing or referencing the copyrighted product. Any other use is a copyright violation.
Material from a copyrighted gaming system that is not open content may not be directly copied or paraphrased on this website. Materials not directly related to game rules may be quoted or paraphrased, but the original source must always be clearly cited.

Steve Jackson Games
This website does not have permission to use material copyrighted by Steve Jackson Games. SJ Games material, including GURPS, may be used for inspiration, much as Steve Jackson was inspired by Champions and other earlier game systems. However, SJ Games rules may not be quoted directly, nor paraphrased. Out of courtesy, where GURPS is a significant source of inspiration for material on this website, the following notice is included, inserted as {{sjgames}}.
