An item is any device or object that can be acquired by the player and does not fit into any other category, including weapons that require prior preparation before use.

Typically items will serve some function (useful or otherwise) that will affect the current state of the game, players, NPCs, or other weapons and items. See the different classes of items listed below for the details of each. Additionally, some modules may adjust, add, and/or remove items to comply with the conventions of the appropriate setting. Additionally, many items have Tech levels to further help distinguish them.

Weapons that require prior preparation or activation before use are also considered items for the purpose of game mechanics. Since you would not reasonably attack by swinging an armed mine at your target, its description will not reflect the necessary statistics to accomplish this in the game world. Instead it would have to be armed in advance to being triggered. Of course, with the proper tools, a grenade could be rigged as a trap as well. In such a case the GM should use all applicable statistics of the improvised trap as common sense dictates.

An item class is a arbitrary collection of items as a means of categorization of items with similar designs or functions. Some items may be part of multiple classes. For example, the Incredible Ring of Endurance would likely be included in the Magical Items class, the Rings class, and possibly even an Incredible class.

Contributor note Any item that does not fit into a class is considered to be a Unique class item, until similar items exist. At such a point, the items should form a new class indicitive of their similarities and be removed from the Unique class.

An item description includes the following features.

• Tech : the first tech level at which the item becomes available, and the last tech level at which it appears in regular use, if applicable
• Hands : whether the item requires one or two
• Attributes : the minimum attributes required to use the item
• Skills : what particular skills are required to use the item
• Range : the greatest distance from which the item can cause an effect
• AOE : the item's Area of Effect
• Damage : the type and amount of damage dealt within the AOE
• Weight : the physical weight the item
• Cost : the cost of a typical item of this kind
• Special : the description of the function or benefits the item provides to the user

If a particular ability is not required, the corresponding field will be left blank in the item description.
