[edit] Universal role-playing systems

[edit] What are they?

A universal role-playing system, such as WikiRPS, is a role-playing system that can be played in any campaign setting. The rules for these role-playing systems have to be very broad and very specific at the same time – they need to be able to cover everything from futuristic fighting with guns to medieval magic to car chases, and everything in between.

[edit] How does WikiRPS fit in?

WikiRPS is designed to be free from any genre restrictions. All of the core rules are portable between genres. Various modules customize the basic mechanics for specific genres, such as a magic module for swords & sorcery.

[edit] History

Before GURPS, each role-playing game was typically designed for a different genre.[1] The most popular genre was swords & sorcery fantasy, but you could also find space opera, wild west, James Bond, horror, superhero, and various others. The Generic Universal Role-Playing System (GURPS) sought to change all that, providing one core system that could be adapted for any of these settings, or any other that might strike your fancy. Thus players can switch between environments without having to learn a whole new rule system each time. WikiRPS continues in this tradition.

  1. Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing, published in 1982, predated GURPS by four years, and may actually have been the first "universal" system.
